Global Tamil Forum on UN resolution on Sri Lanka

Global Tamil Forum (GTF), 24 March 2012 -- Global Tamil Forum (GTF) commends the passing of the UN resolution on Sri Lanka, at the current Human Rights Council (HRC) session in Geneva, as a crucial first step towards accountability and justice for victims on the island. Tamils all over the world are thankful to the United States for spearheading the initiative and to all those who have made this first meaningful step possible. We are most encouraged by India for having made a significant vote in favour of addressing human rights abuses and the importance that accountability plays in facilitating just peace. In addition to the lobbying efforts of the Tamil Diaspora, Tamils in Tamil Nadu and Malaysia, many international parliamentarians, media organisations, non-government bodies and some progressive human rights activists from the South of Sri Lanka have all contributed towards the success of this Resolution. GTF encourages all Tamil political parties in Sri Lanka to convey to the Tamil population the significance of this passing of the resolution as a constructive move towards accountability and sustainable reconciliation.

‘We Tamils still have to plead with collaborators of the genocide for justice’

By Paul Newman, Weekend Leader, 06 March 2012 - In January, the UK based Global Tamil Forum (GTF) led a 7 member delegation under Fr. S J Emmanuel to the centenary celebrations of the African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa. Peeved at the invitation to a Tamil diaspora group, the Sri Lankan government had declined to participate at the historic ANC function. The ANC invitation to GTF came as a morale booster for Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora groups fighting for self-determination rights. Last year, ministers of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) were invited to open an embassy in Southern Sudan. These two episodes and the growing support in the international community for an independent international investigation into allegations of human rights violations in Sri Lanka have raised hopes among Tamils all over the world of trying President Mahinda Rajapaksa for war crimes at the International Court of Justice.

PRESS STATEMENT BY GLOBAL TAMIL FORUM, July 6th 2011 - A packed reception in the British Parliament on July 5th highlighted the level of support amongst parliamentarians and key decision-makers for truth, accountability and justice in Sri Lanka.

Hosted by Hon. Lee Scott MP and Hon. Siobhain McDonagh MP, Chair and Vice-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Tamils (APPG – T), and facilitated by the Global Tamil Forum (GTF), the event was attended by over 40 Members of Parliament including Government Ministers, Shadow Ministers, MPs and Lords. A number of representatives from leading NGOs, Embassies and High Commissions in London, as well as British, Tamil, Sinhala and Indian media organisations were also in attendance. A background slideshow displayed photos and quotes depicting the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka since the end of the war in 2009 and international responses to the prevailing situation and emerging evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Commenting on the powerful images and messages on those screens, one senior foreign diplomat remarked that the captions are a testament of her country's commitment to pressing the Government of Sri Lanka on issues concerning accountability and reconciliation in order to achieve lasting peace on the island.

Speaking on behalf of the Government, Hon. Alistair Burt MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, emphasised that reconciliation and long-lasting peace in Sri Lanka could only be achieved through a credible and independent investigation into the allegations of war crimes committed during the final stages of Sri Lanka’s military conflict.
